Go on holiday without being afraid your home or business will be broken into. Is that even possible?

The holiday season is fast approaching and more and more people are starting to worry about what will happen to their home or business while they are away. The fear of a possible break-in due to them being absent is great. How can you safeguard your property?

When on holidays, you want to leave all your worries behind you. However, what happens when they follow you? Most people don’t relax completely when on holiday, because they’re always thinking about whether what they have left behind at home or at their business is safe.

You’ll often hear tips being given by various people. These include things like leaving some lights on, making sure you empty your mailbox or parking your car in front of the house, so as to create the illusion that you are there. However, these solutions do not in effect solve the problem. The important thing is that you feel calm, sound in the knowledge that your property is in safe hands.

So how can you go away on holiday without being afraid of a break-in?

Install an alarm system

Your first line of defence against a break-in is an alarm system. Ensure that the system you choose includes door and window sensors. Some systems allow you to automatically monitor what happens at home, and to remotely manage things using a computer or smartphone. It’s also important that the alarm system you install is connected to a 24/7 central monitoring station which will call the relevant authorities if the slightest anomaly is detected.

Make sure the alarm system also includes environmental sensors.

Most modern home security systems have the option of checking not just whether someone has entered your property, but also environmental factors. Flood sensors detect changes in air humidity levels which can indicate broken pipes or devices. Many security systems also enable synchronisation with smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors so that you are notified if there is a likelihood of a fire. Moreover, modern security systems have been designed with sensors that ignore pets and cancel any false alarms triggered by them.

Install a video intercom

A video intercom allows you to answer the door and see who is there no matter where you are. Every time someone rings the bell, you receive a notification on your phone so you can see and talk to the visitor in real time. You can create the illusion that you are at home.

Invest in security cameras

A properly designed CCTV system can be the difference between the perpetrator being arrested or not. In addition to acting as prevention and putting off possible break-ins, since it makes it clear that the premises are being monitored, when a crime is committed it can offer important evidence that will lead to the perpetrators being arrested.

Make it look like someone is there

Apart from being extremely convenient, home automation can also keep your home safe during the time you are away. The ability to control devices remotely via your mobile phone helps you create the illusion that you are at home. Turning the lighting, radio or television on or off can actually make a difference.
